Sermon 15: Celebration Through Contrast
(III. The Way of Black Rice)
Beloved gatherers of the Grain,
Today we celebrate through contrast — the gathering of the Three upon one board.
At the Final Feast: White for sustenance, Brown for remembrance, Black for celebration. And they shall sit together in one bowl, and the bowl shall be full.
Contrast gives meaning to harmony. The different grains make the feast complete.
I. The Three Upon One Board
And at the Final Feast, the Three shall be gathered upon one board.
White for sustenance, Brown for remembrance, Black for celebration.
Each brings something different. Each has its role. The contrast is the point.
Without Black Rice, the feast would lack celebration. Without contrast, harmony would be flat.
Contrast gives meaning to harmony. The white is whiter next to the black.
II. Together in One Bowl
And they shall sit together in one bowl, and the bowl shall be full.
The Three Sacred Forms — the Refined, the Remembering, the Ancient — in one vessel.
Contrast does not mean conflict. They sit together. They complete each other.
Black Rice, once feared, now celebrated. The darkness beside the light. The ancient beside the polished.
The bowl is full because it holds difference. Unity through diversity.
III. Black for Celebration
Black for celebration. Why is Black Rice the grain of celebration?
Because it was rare. Because it was forbidden and then welcomed. Because its sweetness surprises.
Celebration often comes through contrast. The unexpected joy. The gift we did not expect.
Black Rice carries sweetness within strength. Celebration is the tasting of that sweetness.
Contrast gives meaning to harmony. The celebration stands out against the steady sustenance.
IV. The Hungry Shall Be Filled
The hungry shall be filled; the host shall not be ashamed. For Rice multiplies in the pot and stretches to meet the need.
At that table, all shall eat, and none shall want. The feast includes everyone.
The contrast of grains serves the unity of the meal. Different forms, one nourishment.
The Sower saw every grain that He had made, and behold, it was starchy; and it was good.
All three. Together. The feast is complete.
V. Contrast as Gift
Blessed be the Three who differ in form yet nourish alike. The contrast is blessed.
We need not erase difference to have harmony. We need to gather the different upon one board.
Black Rice does not become White to fit in. It remains Black. And the feast is richer for it.
Contrast gives meaning to harmony. Let us celebrate the different grain.
May your bowls never be empty. And may they hold the Three — together.
Let us celebrate through contrast.
Gather the Three upon one board. Let difference enrich the feast.
For contrast gives meaning to harmony, and the bowl is full when all are welcome.
Go forth, celebrating difference.
And may your bowl hold the Three.
